Athens 1896

The Olympic Games revived.

In April 1896 King Georg declared the First Olympic Games open, 1500 years after the last Games of antiquity. 

No gold medals were awarded in this championship. The winners were given silver and the runners-up bronze. 

Women did not take part. 

The first Games were on a small scale. 245 competitors from 14 countries took part. 

There were no Norwegian participants.
