For the first time since 1952 a summer Games was held without boycotts. 

The revolutions in Europe and elsewhere round the world also produced changes in the Olympic family as many new nations joined. 

Linda Andersen won a sailing gold and so became Norway’s first woman to win gold in a Summer Games. 

Jon Rønningen retained his gold from the Seoul Games.
