After a poor performance at Calgary, the Sixteenth Winter Olympics were a comeback for Norwegian winter sports.

The Norwegian team won a total of twenty medals, nine of them gold.

The best performers were Nordic skiers Bjørn Dæhlie and Vegard Ulvang with three golds and one silver each. Preparations for the Lillehammer Games were under way.

Several new disciplines appeared at Albertville: freestyle, moguls, Nordic events with pursuit start, four short-track skating events and three biathlon disciplines for women.
