Berlin 1916
Cancelled by the World War.
The IOC believed that an Olympic Games in Berlin in 1916 could help to relieve the tense situation which dominated Europe.
On the 28 June 1914 the shots were fired at Sarajevo. Germany believed the war would be short and would not withdraw as host.
Moving the Games to the USA or Scandinavia was considered, but in May 1915 the Sixth Olympic Games were cancelled.
The principle that cancelled Games should keep their official Olympic number was introduced.
